I was riding on the Silver Comet the other day, and was approaching an intersection with another rider. I noticed him come to a complete stop and dismount his bicycle, then remove his helmet. -Odd, I thought, and not at all how most of us handle intersections on the Silver Comet. Usually, we slow down and holler “clear” if nothing’s coming. To stop and dismount, AND remove a helmet was really odd and unusual!

Then I noticed a funeral procession approaching at a slow speed, with hearse in the lead followed by several cars with their headlights on. The other rider bowed his head and closed his eyes in contemplation. I was very touched by his behavior, and had to comment to him that I thought his actions were special, and of a very feeling man.

The rider recovered himself and replied, “Yeah, well we were married 35 years”.

Wow, that's heavy.

The Silver Comet can be a reverent place sometimes.

Guess being on the bike vs at the funeral, suggests something about the relationship?
A gesture of convenience, in passing remembrance, donning the helmet and riding on.
Lots of symbolism; could even be said the bicycle may have been part of the story.
