I'm looking for the shortest route from Dallas/Seaboard --> Hiram/Coppermine which doesn't use the trail.

Safety is obviously a concern and I'm not finding much.

Main St. --> Hardee St. looks OK but Merchants Drive looks like the only option after that.

Could go further south to Cole Lake --> Scoggins --> Hiram Sudie --> Bill Carruth. Bill Carruth has nice wide shoulders and bike lanes so it would not be bad at all but what about Hiram Sudie? Is it rideable or too sketchy?

Everything else seems much further south. I'm open to suggestions and would not mind light trails or gravel.

This would be a good option. Very similar to what we ride on Thurs.

This has a gravel option accessed via Jewel Cole which is a fairly challenging climb, but one I like.
Forrest and I rode part (most) of this, but not what shows as a pretty challenging grade as I think we were short on time.
And, I don't know of anyone that has actually ridden it, so you might have some probs and require a plan B.
Which would be ~8mi on the map.
Most of the section on Hiram-Sudie is downhill, but traffic might still be an issue.
Oh, there are sprinklers along the gravel road section... you do risk being showered with gray water from the treatment plant.

This would likely be the best.
Now, there's a station/store on Hwy 61 across from Hay-Renfroe. You can pull in there and wait for clear traffic to jump across Hwy61 to Hay-Renfroe.
With some planning you likely could find a gravel track along the RxR tracks to reach Academy Dr.

Looking at the satellite image, it looks like they are using that near dormant spur line to load logs onto RxR cars just west of Academy. So much of that RxR segment likely has good gravel access.

One more.
This one has 1.3 mi on the Silver Comet Trail, but...
there is a treatment plant gravel road and the Comet Side Trail along much of that section.
With a little creative route exploring you can replace most of the trail section.

Thanks Chris. Really appreciate the effort you put into that.

Number two might work.

I met a guy who claimed to have been stopped by the sheriff recently for riding east from Dallas before sunrise. He said they saw him on the cameras and came out to have a conversation. Not sure if it was just a slow night for LEOs or if there was some recent activity which raised their anxiety but either way, I'm trying to avoid the trail after sunset and before sunrise.

Will probably try Hay Renfroe --> Davis Mill --> Jewel Cole and then work my way over to Bill Carruth Parkway which has bike lanes. Do you know if Phillips Lee/Hickory Leaf is paved all the way through?

Phillips-Lee/Hickory Leaf is where the spray fields are and the gravel section.
