Some of you might have heard my Johnny G story, which goes back to the mid-80's.
Johnny G is known as the originator of Spinning and Spin training.
I was doing some research on Spin and came across some interesting history. Turns out it appears, as is the case with so many things like this, Johnny G is no longer part of the Spinning team/comany, which is now controlled by MadDog Athletics of which the Spinning co-founder John Baudhuin is now the CEO. I suspect there is a story the likes of those found in a good mini-series behind all this.

If you are interested:

Now associated with Krankcycle:

Unfortunately, Johnny G, has had his own challenges:
Quote:
In 2003, he contracted a virus in his heart that led to a debilitating cardio myopathy. Diagnosed with heart failure, he was placed on the recipient list awaiting a heart transplant. Using innovative therapies and treatments under the supervision of his medical team Johnny was able start on the path to healing. During this challenging time, Johnny studied recovery using many special formulas.

To put things in perspective, while he has been called an originator, that would not be the case for indoor cycling in-general, as discussed in the WikiPedia article:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Johnny_G#.23

Certainly, he could be credited with the surge in Spinning interest during the 90's.

Note: inked date, 1897

Viral cardiomyopathy
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Viral cardiomyopathy occurs when viral infections cause myocarditis with a resulting thickening of the myocardium and dilation of the ventricules. These viruses include Coxsackie B and adenovirus, echoviruses, influenza H1Ni, Epstein-Barr virus, rubella (German measles virus), varicella (chickenpox virus), mumps, measles, parvoviruses, yellow fever, dengue fever, polio, rabies and the viruses that cause hepatitis A and C.

Myocarditis or inflammatory cardiomyopathy is inflammation of heart muscle (myocardium).

Myocarditis is most often due to infection by common viruses, such as parvovirus B19, less commonly nonviral pathogens such as Borrelia burgdorferi (Lyme disease) or Trypanosoma cruzi, or as a hypersensitivity response to drugs.[1]

The definition of myocarditis varies, but the central feature is an infection of the heart, with an inflammatory infiltrate, and damage to the heart muscle, without the blockage of coronary arteries that define a heart attack (myocardial infarction) or other common noninfectious causes.[2] Myocarditis may or may not include death (necrosis) of heart tissue. It may include dilated cardiomyopathy.[1]

Myocarditis is often an autoimmune reaction. Streptococcal M protein and coxsackievirus B have regions (epitopes) that are immunologically similar to cardiac myosin. During and after the infection, the immune system may attack cardiac myosin.
