I noticed this set into the wall at the west end of the Brushy Mountain Tunnel

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/bikeforums.net-vbulletin/1024x768/02_17_19_001_sm_9836200712a4006b58a46937ee64fe19f7cfa56b.jpg

Some searching revealed the following:

The "name" of the marker is Y248 and the description is:

DG1052'DESCRIBED BY NATIONAL GEODETIC SURVEY 1972
DG1052'6.3 MI SE FROM ROCKMART.
DG1052'6.3 MILES SOUTHEAST ALONG THE SEABOARD AIR LINE RAILROAD FROM THE
DG1052'STATION AT ROCKMART, 0.2 MILE NORTHWEST OF MILEPOST 612, 5 FEET
DG1052'SOUTH OF THE SOUTH RAIL, SET VERTICALLY IN THE NORTH FACE OF THE
DG1052'SOUTH WALL AT THE WEST END OF THE DIVIDED TUNNEL, 2 FEET EAST OF
DG1052'THE WEST END OF THE TUNNEL, 2 1/2 FEET ABOVE THE GROUND, AND ABOUT
DG1052'1 1/2 FEET ABOVE THE LEVEL OF THE TRACK. RESET IS BELIEVED TO BE
DG1052'IN THE SAME AREA.

Full datasetf for this marker is at https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/cgi-bin/ds_mark.prl?PidBox=DG1052.

Apparently there are many such markers along the Silver Comet Trail. I've never noticed. A searchable map is at https://www.ngs.noaa.gov/NGSDataExplorer/

I have seen that marker. Do you remember how high it is above the trail? That was probably put in place when they rebuilt the tunnel.
