I went exploring off the map and practiced technique a bit today. User MrBigStuff has been giving some advice on riding fast and it has been extremely helpful.

Riding fast on gravel is harder than it looks and the first video illustrates this well. The turn was sharper than I thought and the bike was set up too far to the inside. I was on the front brake late and this caused the front wheel to start to wash out. I had to get off the brake quickly and shift weight out over the tires. The bike regained neutral handling but drifted toward the outside a few feet causing significant loss of speed. This also put me into some washboard.

In the second video I wasn't on the brake at all. It looks smooth and in control. Maybe this descent wasn't as fast as the others.

Again, coming into the first turn I was on the front brake late and the front tire felt like it wanted to loose traction. This slowed the bike down for the next three turns. I was trying to pedal through the whole set of turns but it threw off my rhythm and I had to coast to recover composure. Gotta work on that.

The first video is Williams Rd near Dabbs Bridge Rd while the second and third are Gore Lakes Rd off Johnny Monk.

I'm too chicken to take the gravel like that. What kind of tires are you riding on?

I was on 38 mm Schwabe G-One Allaround. These were as good as any road tire I've ever ridden, fast and supple. Super fast on hard pack but could get a little squirrely if the surface is wet or very loose. They didn't play well with my rims. Shame because they are a super nice rolling tire.

Now I'm on 35 mm Panaracer Gravelking SK. Not as fast on pavement by a long shot but lots of grip in loose gravel and somewhat forgiving. A 40 mm pair are on deck and the extra width should be nice.

They are both gravel specific tires.

Uhhh, Tim. I've never been "fast" LOL! You've definitely got me mixed up with someone else!

Love the videos. I'm counting the days when I can get back on a bike...any bike. I'm in the midst of recovering from major ankle surgery to fix some congenital problems and damage from my "youth" incurred with a couple of severe sprained ankles playing hoops. Funny thing is, cycling was the only physical activity that didn't "hurt" before the surgery. Man, I hope I can start working back in shape before warmer weather gets here.

My bad.

I thought you were the same person who posts on another website. He posted a 96 mile ride on Strava yesterday so that definitely isn't you.

I hope you feel better and have a full recovery.
