I didn't notice this myself, but Mike Britton asked on Strava.

My Garmin 500 has been doing some strange things lately.
Note also the 194 max cadence which was a single spike.
The 206 HR (BPM) occurred on one segment, then settled back down to my usual mediocre levels. My avg HR for the day was 134.
For the last 12 months:
According to Garmin Connect my avg Max HR is 161, which is higher what I'd have guessed as when I look, it seldom hits in the 160's.
It shows that 206 event as my max.
Garmin Connect shows my avg HR is 117.
Maybe I need a computer with an HR alert?

My HR was screwed up Saturday. In the first ten miles it was above 160 with a max of 245. Then it settled down to a more normal , for me anyways. Go figure.

This has worked pretty good for me in cold weather.

I went back through my Garmin data and found one other high excursion above 200 and it was at the start of Tues ride, way back on March 10, 2015.

Any way...
found that I can set HR alerts on the Garmin 500.
I indeed had an alert set, but it was 185 which must the Zone5 default.
The Zones must be set in Connect, then synced back to the device.
But...
they don't reset automagically.
I had to switch the Alert Zone to 4, then back to Zone 5; that reset the Max to the new setting, which I set to 170.

I was probably getting beeps but not realizing what the source was.
My Garmin needs work anyway as it is still creating laps randomly.
I plan to send it in after the time change. It is still functional, so I guess I could consider using those $'s for a new device.

It looks like the high excursions are at start periods. Saturday, we had a long break at the store and the excursion was just after that. Last Saturday I think Joe missed his usual warm-up due to traffic issues.

So, slower starts might be needed for Old Guys with limited warm-ups or long cool-downs (stops) occur if these excursions have any merit?

FYI: the HR Zones are set for each device under User Settings, within Garmin Connect.

Your HR almost certainly didn't go above 180 unless you have a heart condition. The skin sensors are pretty dumb and are picking up bad signals.

It used to be at the beginning of my rides before I started to sweat I saw readings well above 200. It happens a lot also when the device is loose. For a reading like 220, it was closer to 110. There are reasons for not putting on an antialiasing filter or something of that nature because there are occasionally true readings above 200. I got my HR to 201 in 2013 while climbing Moon Ridge Road which is steeper than Brasstown. Something felt completely awry, and I looked down to the monitor, and I saw 201 and backed down enough to keep the bike upright. I watched it slowly drop: 200, 199, 199, 198, 197, 197, 196, 195, .... and it hung in the 190s until I crested the wall and dropped back to grades in the teens or so.
