Four of us rode the Silver Comet Trail from Florence Road to Coots Lake and back on Sunday, 10/09/2016. The bridges and tunnels were nice, especially the lighted Brushy Mountain tunnel. However, there were a lot of pine needles and branches on most of the route. This was after the Hurricane Matthew winds on Saturday. I'm putting $20.00 in the pot for blower gas and everyone else is encouraged to kick in some money, too.

I donated a Uleysses Grant last night.... I also encourage folks, especially locals to help out, Geek and others do their wonderful work on our trail particularly this time of the year. I have actually trimmed some of encroaching bushes at mile 13 this summer, as it is where my house is close too....

Geek, I hate to have to bring this up again but you really do need to make sure all those pine needles and leaves are off the trail since you are now retired and have nothing else to do. Laughing

Guys, the $$ is REALLY appreciated and needed.
The county efforts are spotty and their efforts diminish when the weather cools and they don't have to cut the grass.

Yes, Paulding recently fixed the lighting in the Brushy Mtn Tunnel and Polk replaced all the lights in the tunnel at Coots and power should be restored soon. Getting something done at the 278/Pumpkinvine tunnel would be nice too. It's particularly hard to see heading NW as your eyes are trying to adjust to the bright concrete.

Robert, as usual, you are so thoughtful. Your incisive suggestions and comments are always appreciated.
Makes me miss Parke.

Speaking with Deputy Ward this afternoon.
Someone was nagging him about the dirty trail and Paulding having a blower.
He said, "yes they did, they ran it one day for about 2hrs".
So there you have it.

People pissed Jim off, so he's not cleaning the entire trail any more.
When he does run it, he goes to Rambo, which is the section he rides.
So, it's basically me running the blower now. People pissed me off last November and I only decided to start running again recently.

The Paulding Deputies are sincerely appreciative of what we do and always thank us. That helps.

Why would anybody p.o. the trail maintenance people?

That's like insulting the waitress before your food comes or like sh!tt!ng in your own mess kit, as we used to say in the Army.

Exactly.
People have complained they were run off the trail, blower blew them off the trail, dirtied their car in the parking lot, etc.
Jim has had people flip him off.
The blower has little effect on a regular road bike if blowing clear air.
Much/most any effect on these bikes are imagined. Also I run the rear blower slower now, I think the turbine whine created some of these mental images.
They also seem to be concerned about the dust. That one amazes me, compared to how much crap they are breathing carried off their front wheel. I've been congested since our ride yesterday, crap flying in my eyes past the sunglasses. You want to see a cloud, watch the blower pass over the concrete that looks clean next to the Metromont plant. I like to look back, see the cloud, makes me chuckle thinking about it.

We stop and throttle both blowers down for bikes and peds now, make every effort to communicate with trail users. Difficult for many peds to understand that all they need to do is step across the trail for a brief moment for us to pass. So, I have to sit there and wait for them to walk-by.
