Anyone have any tribal knowledge to share about the roads or area between Fairmount and Tate?

The area is pretty rugged according to the topo maps. I'm looking for lots of elevation change - Henderson Mountain Rd and Vistaview Parkway look interesting. I'll probably scout the area by car soon and something like the route below is a rough plan.

Anything to avoid? Anything in that area a cyclist should definitely see - views, scenery, local attractions, food stops and so forth? Are there better roads?

Vista View might be gated entry, iirc.

I'd welcome getting in touch with someone familiar with the area.

Thanks.

Studying the map it seems that some of the route and many other roads in the area are gravel, which is both disappointing and cool at the same time.

And yes, google street view shows a gate at the beginning of Vistaview.

Henderson Mountain is a bear of a climb from a little before mile 50 to the top - really steep. The descent is steep also but the pucker factor has been somewhat mitigated since it was re-paved 2 or 3 years ago - you shouldn't be dodging a bunch of gravel and torn up pavement anymore. I remember driving the roads that you show going to the left of The Basin lake and there are some roads up there that make the climb up Henderson looks moderate. I think Turkey Trail is absolutely ridiculously steep and straight down. I would not want to go down that road but I think the section you have mapped might be past the really steep part but I'm just not sure.

White Pine Crossover, Carlan, and Jerusalem Church are all good roads. I took my car down Moore's Gin years ago when I was investigating roads up there and it turned to gravel after a mile or so but the gravel part I went down was easily rideable. Cowart Mountain just below Moore's Gin always looked interesting to me but I don't know anything about it. There is just a whole network of gravel roads and rarely used tracks up there that look like you could spend a few days exploring them all.

That's not much help but that's about all I know.

Thank you Robert. Exactly the kind of info I was looking for. It is a huge help.

Turkey Trail is 17.5% grade! Shocked

I'll bet it's steeper than that in places.
