| Who should sponsor Tour de Georgia or Discovery? |
| Posted by: webgeek on Sunday, February 25, 2007 - 04:16 PM |
In a recent story, one writer made the case for Amgen sponsoring the team, soon to be formerly known as Discovery. Yes, that might help create a positive image for prescription drugs in an ever growing sceptical world. At first glance, that made good sense to me and it still does. Thinking about these "funding" issues, who should really step up to plate... Thinking about these "funding" issues, who should really step up to plate and recognize the opportunity here? How about "big oil". Yes, those giants of industry (often viewed as sources of pollution and energy exploitation), now sitting on record profits; especially any of those corps making a push into alternative energy resources or power generation.
What better way to make an incredibly "inexpensive" plunge to alter the public image of that company or energy industry? They spend more $$$ than that on producing Super Bowl adds or any Sunday evening (soon to be forgotten) advertising budget than all the monies we are talking about for an event like Tour de Georgia or a major cycling team like "the team to be formerly as Discovery".
Sponsoring cycling events, teams and clubs (even websites) makes good sense. Cyclists are an enthusiastic group, happy to wear jerseys and kits with sponsor logos emblazoned front and back, willing to ride down your states highways and byways as rolling billboards for absolutely "zero" cost (heck, we usually have to buy our jerseys). We'll put decals in our car/truck windows, wear tee-shirts, jackets, hats, etc carrying sponsor logos most anywhere we go. We're proud to say we are cyclists or tri/bi/du/athletes and in-general portray a positive public image. But, we need to sell this image both conceptually and in our actions on the road. We need to demonstrate that what-we-do (ride bikes) can add value to someone's product/service and public image.
